Tethered Horizons, a solo exhibition by Jillian Hagadorn (b. 1997, Syracuse, NY), expands on these themes, exploring the complexities that lay behind identity, personhood, and the profound impact of place. In 2023, Hagadorn relocated to the Netherlands, embarking on a journey that would change not only her artistic practice, but deeply challenged her perspective on the notions of home. Many artists throughout history have traveled for their art, seeking people, places, and things outside of their homelands, sometimes returning and sometimes not. In Hagadorn’s case, the unexpected circumstances and world she stepped into during her European stay, became a catalyst for self-examination, leading her to create a visual chronicle of her journey through these paintings. Hagadorn’s time in other countries greatly shifted her trajectory as an artist and as a citizen of the world. She creates images that not only depict her journey but also provide space and introspection for viewers to think about their complex relationships to home and how to each of us, that can yield a myriad of places and ideals. . This exhibition celebrates tethering - the notion that you may always be tethered to home, no matter how many horizons you explore.
